Istikhara – In the Light of Quran & Sunnah

"And We reveal in the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers."(Surah Al-Isra: 82)

What is Istikhara?

Istikhara is a spiritual guidance method through which we seek Allah’s approval and direction before making any significant decision. It provides clarity and helps in making the best choice.
Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran
"And whoever fears Allah, He will make a way for him and provide for him from where he does not expect." (Surah At-Talaq: 2-3)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said
"Whoever performs Istikhara will never suffer loss. And whoever consults will never regret." (Musnad Ahmad, Vol. 6, Hadith 277)

The Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS) stated
"When you are in doubt about a matter, perform two Rak’ahs of prayer and supplicate to Allah, He will guide you to the best path."(Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, Hadith 482)

When is Istikhara Needed?

  • Istikhara for Marriage (Love Marriage Istikhara)
  • Istikhara for Business (Business Istikhara)
  • Istikhara for Blockages & Hurdles
  • Istikhara for Family Issues (Domestic Problems)
  • Istikhara for Health (Medical Problems)
  • Istikhara for Divorce & Marital Conflicts
If you are confused about any decision, performing Istikhara is the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)!

How to Perform Istikhara?

The most authentic method of Istikhara is to perform two Rak’ahs of prayer and recite the supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Istikhara prayer

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1166)
This is the most recommended way of seeking divine guidance for any matter.

What to Do After Performing Istikhara?

  • Istikhara does not necessarily mean that you will see a dream or receive an instant sign.
  • After Istikhara, follow the inclination of your heart – that is usually the best path.
  • If you still feel uncertain, Istikhara can be repeated.
  • Continue praying and ask Allah to guide you towards the best decision.
